Our History

Edgar Faulkner Sr., now deceased, came to Indiana from the state of Kentucky. He was an ambitious young man setting his sights on owning a family funeral home which remains open today. The Faulkner Mortuary just surpassed 55 years of service to the Muncie community. Edgar Sr. began his career in Indianapolis, IN after earning a degree in mortuary science at the Indiana College of Mortuary Science. He was first employed at People's Funeral Home in Indianapolis. Edgar met and married Doris Day. They moved to Muncie from Indianapolis and began the Faulkner Mortuary at the corner of Wolfe and Willard Streets. After many years at this location, Edgar moved his business to 915 E. Willard Street where it is located today. The mortuary has undergone two extensive renovations, the last being in 1995 led by Edgar Jr., now the owner of Faulkner Mourtuary. During his career, Edgar Sr. had other business ventures. He founded, owned and operated the Faulkner Rst Home and Faulkner Realty both established in 1960. Edgar died tragically in 1972 as the result of a traffic accident. Edgar Jr. remained the nursing home administrator until the home was sold in 1975. Doris was a graduate of the Muncie Community Schools and Ball State University. She spent her career in the field of music as a choral music teacher and then retired from Muncie Schools as Director of Fine Arts. Doris lived at Lynd House on East McGalliard Avenue in Muncie until her passing on May 23, 2009. Throughout their lives, both Edgar Sr. and Doris loved their community and volunteered countless hours to help families and particularly the youth of Muncie. Doris Faulkner was the organist for decades at the Bethel A.M.E. Church. She also was the organist and choir director for Riverside United Methodist Church for a short time. Edgar and Doris were members of boards, organizations and philanthropic campaigns throughout the community. Doris and her mother, Bracillian Day, particularly loved the Federated Clubs of which they were members. Edgar and Doris had two children, Edgar Jr. and Carol Alice. Edgar Jr. resides in Muncie with his wife Ermalene, daughter of Ermal (deceased) and Miriam Roundtree. They both graduated from Muncie Southside High School. Ed attended Vincennes University and graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1970. Ed Jr. is retired from Borg Warner Automotive where he was a production supervisor while owning and operating the Faulkner Mortuary. Ed is very proud that he has continued the dream of his father for over 40 years. Ed loves to hunt and fish in his spare time. Ermalene graduated from Ball State University in the field of education. Following 16 years in the classroom, one year as an assistant principal and ten years as an elementary principal, she is now in her 15th year at the district office for the Muncie Community Schools. The family has been lifelong members of Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1020 E. Jackson Street. Ed Jr. and Ermalene also serve on numerous community boards. Ed and Ermalene have two children, Edgar III and Edie Marie. Edie is a Director at Wabash National in West Lafayette, IN. She graduated from Muncie Central High School, Purdue University with a degree in engineering, and the University of Michigan with master's degrees in engineering and M.B.A. and holds a Six Sigma Black Belt. She is married to Tyrone Reeves and has one son, Christopher, age 11. Edgar III has spent his spare time playing and coaching football since age 10. Ed III graduated from Muncie Central High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin where he played tailback for the Badgers. During his Badger career he had the opportunity to play in five bowl games, including the 1999 and 2000 Rose Bowl games, both of which Wisconsin was victorious. Following graduation he coached one year at Anderson University. In 2003, he joined the Ball State Cardinals coaching staff as a graduate assistant. He received his master's degree from Ball State in 2005 and became the running backs coach for the Cardinals that spring. In 2009, Ed III accepted the position as Offensive Coordinator for Ball State University. Following BSU he coached one year at Northern Illinois, one year at University of Wisconsin, and is now in his second season with the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Edgar III is married to Anissa and they have  two children, Edgar IV, 12, and Madison Rose, 9. Carol Alice Faulkner Townsend lives in Houston, Texas with her husband, Arnold and daughter,Claire Elise, a sophomore at Harvard. Carol graduated from Northside High School and Ball State University. She is a choral music teacher in Houston. Carol and her family are very active in their church, Wheeler Baptist in Houston.

The Faulkner Family is extremely grateful to the Muncie community for the sixty plus years of support to our mortuary. We applaud your commitment to minority business. It has been and will continue to be a blessing and privilege to serve families during their time of bereavement. Thank you and God Bless!
